Microsoft’s head of Xbox Phil Spencer has revealed during an interview with Bloomberg that the expects platform exclusive to dwindle in the coming years.
The executive commented that multiformat games was healthier in the long run for the video games industry compared to exclusives titles, which he says are “something we’re just going to see less and less of.”
Maybe you happen in your household to buy an Xbox and I buy a PlayStation and our kids want to play together and they can’t because we bought the wrong piece of plastic to plug into our television.
We really love to be able to bring more players in reducing friction, making people feel safe, secure when they’re playing, allowing them to find their friends, play with their friends, regardless of what device — I think in the long run that is good for this industry.
And maybe in the short run, there’s some people in some companies that don’t love it. But I think as we get over the hump and see where this industry can continue to grow, it proves out to be true.

It’s interesting Spencer brings this up, as Microsoft is set to purchase publishing behemoth Activision Blizzard, which houses the likes of Call of Duty, one of the biggest gaming franchises on the planet.
As such, it’s understandable that PlayStation gamers are worried about Call of Duty no longer being available on Sony consoles. However, Microsoft has said it wouldn’t be profitable to have the first-person shooter franchise exclusive to a single format.
If that wasn’t enough, the Xbox format holder has outright stated that it has no plans to stop Call of Duty and other Activision properties from being available on PlayStation consoles.
