Wolfenstein 3 confirmed to end epic trilogy

Good news for Wolfenstein fans! Wolfenstein 3 has been confirmed in a new interview with the executive producer at MachineGames, Jerk Gustafsson.

In between talking about his feelings about the positive reaction to Wolfenstein 2, Gustafsson also touched on the future of the series, confirming that it was always planned to be part of a trilogy.

Though the team is first planning to release some DLC for Wolfenstein 2, their next move is to concentrate on the development of Wolfenstein 3.

Wolfenstein 3 planned to end trilogy

In an interview with GamesRadar, Gustafsson said: “Of course, people will have some rest and the team will have well-deserved time off, but we are also eager to get started on something new and continue to work on this Wolfenstein IP that we have come to love so much. Then what we're doing now is some DLC work.”

It's not a done and dusted deal quite yet though, as the developer also says that they will wait to see how well the current Wolfenstein game does until it fully decides on its future plans.

“Even from the very beginning - when we set out to start work on The New Order - we had always planned this as a trilogy, and this is the second game,” he writes. “Whatever happens in the future we will have to see; it depends on how well the game does - but we have always planned for a trilogy and we as a team would love to continue to work with Wolfenstein. Still, you never know what will happen.”

He goes on to say that Wolfenstein 3 has not yet hit its planning stage as they look to focus on the Xbox One X release and further DLC for The New Order.

Though we don't know the current status of Wolfenstein 2 sales, it was reported that the game didn't sell well on release. A report from VentureBeat in November suggested that sales were off to a slow start as it failed to hit the top 10 charts, despite an aggressive and costly marketing campaign.
