Epic Games unveiled the Unreal Engine 5 today for PS5 and Xbox Series X, and the good news is that the stunning-looking tech won’t cost developers a penny (or dime, for that matter) to license. That’s a far cry from 2002, when the engine cost $500,000 to license(!).
Unreal Engine 5 PS5 Won’t Cost Devs Money To License
That’s according to Shahid Kamal Ahmad on Twitter, who shed some interesting light on the new tech:
The up front cost of licensing Unreal Engine in 2002 was $500,000. The up front cost of licensing Unreal Engine today is $0. Forget the graphical improvement, that’s technology for you, and it’s inevitable. The real progress is in how accessible the technology has become.
In addition to confirming news on the Unreal Engine 5, Epic revealed that the massively popular Fortnite will be heading to PS5 and Xbox Series X at launch. Furthermore, the game is going to be migrated to UE5 in mid-2021.
