EA and developer Maxis has announced that The Sims 4 will officially be going free-to-play on October 18, 2022, and will be supported by Maxis “for the foreseeable future.”
It’s a huge shift for a game that continues to sell millions of copies years after it launched, which, by the way, was all the way back in 2014.

Since then, Maxis has provided plenty of expansion packs to keep the fourth mainline entry in the franchise fresh for players, and with the studio’s announcement it looks like that’ll be the case for a while longer.
“With The Sims 4 going free to play, our team is more dedicated than ever to developing new and meaningful The Sims 4 experiences for our players” writes Maxis in a blog post. “We will continue to develop and release packs, kits and Sims Delivery Express drops into the foreseeable future.”
Maxis also does mention that it’ll be sharing more about the future of The Sims and what’s to come next soon, so players ought to keep their eyes peeled once it hits October, for any new announcements.
