Yooka-Laylee, a 3D platformer in the vein of Banjo-Kazooie and Super Mario 64, has been fully funded on Kickstarter less than 24 hours after launch.
In fact, Yooka-Laylee hit its funding goal in just 40 minutes. In the time since, backers have been knocking stretch goals out of the park.
Yooka-Laylee is in development by Playtonic Games, a team that includes veterans from Rare’s platforming glory days. Several team members, including character designer Steve Mayles, composer Grant Kirkhope, project director Chris Sutherland, and environment artist Steven Hurst hail from Banjo-Kazooie and other Rare classics, like Donkey Kong Country and Goldeneye 007.
This impact of this talent and background can be felt in every colorful ounce of Yooka-Laylee. The two main characters, chameleon Yooka and bat Laylee, are an animal duo in the spirit of bear Banjo and bird Kazooie. The environments are sprawling and imaginative. Collectibles abound in worlds with secrets galore.
With the game having met its funding goal, an eventual PlayStation 4 release is assured. But if Yooka-Laylee hits its ultimate stretch goal of £1,000,000 (roughly $1.5 million USD), we’ll see a simultaneous, day-one release on PC, PlayStation 4, and other platforms.
At this pace, hitting that stretch goal is almost a certainty. So what do you say? Excited for a game from the minds behind Banjo-Kazooie on PS4?
