Box Office Mojo has revealed that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has surpassed Pokemon: Detective Pikachu to become the second-highest grossing video game movie of all time.
The third entry in the Blue Blur’s cinematic franchise has a worldwide gross of $462.5 million following its debut in December 2024, although it’s very unlikely at this point to surpass The Super Mario Bros Movies mammoth $1.36 billion box office takings.
However, there is something to note. Sonic 3 is a live-action movie, while the Super Mario Bros Movie is fully animated, which means Sonic technically ranks as the highest-grossing live action video game film of all time.

Paramount Pictures has already announced that a new Sonic the Hedgehog film has been green lit, and will arrive in Spring 2027. Jim Carrey, who portrays Dr. Robotnik in all three films, has said that he’s opening to playing the character again down the line.
