SEGA has announced the Sonic Mania release date following a breif delay, confirming the retro-flavored platform game will launch on PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on August 15, 2017.

Sonic Mania adheres to the classic template of the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games, taking the form of a 2D platformer right down to the 16-bit aesthetic, which has been recreated in crisp high-definition for the first time. The game features a number of iconic Sonic stages recreated for modern audiences, including the Green Hill Zone, as well as all-new stages developed specifically for Sonic Mania.

As with the previous Sonic games, this latest effort includes three playable characters in the form of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, each with their own unique abilities similar to Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The classic powerup system returns to boot, so you’ll be strapping on Lightning Shields and other handy pickups to give you the edge against Dr. Eggman’s mechanised army.

Sonic Mania forms one of two new games being released to mark the Blue Blur’s 25th anniversary, the other being the 3D platformer, Sonic Forces
