Sonic Mania multiplayer reawakens our inner 90s gamer

SEGA has released a new Sonic Mania gameplay video, this time detailing the upcoming platform title’s competitive multiplayer mode.

The new Competition mode recalls the classic split-screen multiplayer from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, in which two players race against each other to the finish line. As before, you can step into the speed shoes of Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, but there’s a few new tweaks in store.

Sonic Mania’s take on the classic multiplayer sees a number of other factors taken into consideration when determining a victor. This time, the winner comes down to the number of rings you have, time taken to complete the race, your overall score, and items collected.

The overall look still mirror’s Sonic 2’s multiplayer, right down to the ‘squashed’ split-screen effect that we experienced all those years ago on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. Check out the Sonic Mania multiplayer in action below.

Sonic Mania is due out on PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on August 15, 2017. SEGA previously detailed the game’s new bonus and special stages, one of which should feel familiar to anyone who has played Sonic 3.

The game is very much a love letter to retro Sonic fans, featuring classic 2D platforming action with sumptuous old-school aesthetic, which harkens back to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive games.

Sonic Mania features a number of classic Sonic levels such as Green Hill and Chemical Plant, while throwing in a number of all=new stages to keep things fresh. Three playable characters are available in the game, namely the Spiky Speedster himself alongside companions Tails and Knuckles the Echidna.
