Rumor – Warner Bros Has Been Trying To Make A Superman Game Since 2013

According to industry tipster James Sigfield, Warner Bros has been actively trying to get an open-world Superman game off the ground since 2013.

Superman Games Prototyped By WB

One of the original pitches that the company received was similar to Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man, namely an open-world superhero game featuring the Man of Steel. This pitch featured a huge Metropolis City to explore as well as a host of DC villains to battle against.

Unfortunately, the game was shelved by WB not far into the prototyping stage.

A second game was pitched in 2014 under the tentative title of Superman: Unbound, which was designed to follow the events of the comic series/animated movie. Unlike the first prototype, this game would have taken place in Kandor, a city from Krypton that Brainiac shrunk and bottled up before the planet was destroyed.

Superman: Unbound had less of an open-world design in order to limit Superman’s powers, and included villains such as Brainiac and Doomsday. The game was cancelled as at the time WB had mandated that every project should utilise the Arkham engine, something which would have been a poor fit or Superman’s flight abilities.

Despite this, WB continued to receive pitches on various Superman games, although right now it’s unknown if any of these projects were given the green light.

Superman hasn’t exactly had it easy when it comes to his video game outings. In fact, one of his endeavours, Superman 64, has the distinction of being one of the worst games ever made. It’s a far cry from the Batman series, which has received critical acclaim for developer Rocksteady Studios’ Arkham trilogy.

Whether or not we’ll actually see a proper open-world Superman game is anyone’s guess right now, but hopefully something might come up for the PS5. After all, doesn’t the Man of Steel deserve his time in the limelight?
