PS5 users are able to swap the console’s detachable disc drive between consoles, a new YouTube video has revealed.
If you happen to have two detachable disc drives handy, you’re able to easily swap them between consoles thanks to the PS5 being able to quickly register the new drive. In other words, this means that the drive is not locked to one system after you register it, which is done by a one-time online handshake.
The PS5 has to connect online to register the drive again if you reset the console, but once it has been done, it’s possible to use it offline. However, the drive will refuse to accept media if you start up the new PS5 without connecting online; you obviously won’t be able to download digital games without an Internet connection either.
Sony’s new PS5 ‘Slim’ has attracted criticism for requiring users to register the drive online, as there may come a time where the certification process will not be available if servers should be pulled.
The new PS5 console is rolling out in North America now and is available as part of two bundles; one featuring Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and the other including a copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
