Sony is celebrating 30 years of PlayStation next month, with the console having launched in Japan on December 3, 1994 — it didn’t arrive until the following year in the US and UK. To mark the occasion, the format holder has teamed up with Transport for London to decorate tube carriages on the Victoria Line with the iconic PlayStation face buttons.
While it looks pretty snazzy, it’s also worth mentioning that this is the first occasion in over 25 years that Transport for London has allowed a brand to use its tube seats to advertise a product. Sony has of course partnered with the company before; in 2020, it replaced tube signs outside Oxford Circus with the PS button icons, and in 2013 it gave the OXO Tower a makeover with the iconic Circle, Cross, Square, and Triangle icons ahead of PS4’s release.

When the PlayStation first launched in Japan, it was actually outsold by the Sega Saturn for the first few weeks; however, Sony’s console quickly gained momentum and a successful western release in September 1995 thanks to superior marketing, a competitive price point, and strong software. The system went on to sell over 100 million units by the time it was discontinued in 2006.
