Blizzard have recently been teasing a new hero coming to Overwatch but today we got a little more insight into who that hero is, with a brand new animated short! The next Overwatch hero is Echo, although Blizzard haven’t confirmed when it is arriving on PS4.
Echo is described as “An evolutionary robot programmed with a rapidly adapting artificial intelligence, Echo represents the cutting edge of technology,” by the official Overwatch Twitter account.
Not much is known in terms of the characters abilities and what role the character plays within the game, but the animated short gives us some more information regarding the lore and origin story for Echo.

It seems as though Echo is built with the purpose of continuing her creator’s mission. An echo of her legacy if you will. It also seems to show a young Soldier 76 allowing Echo’s creator to join Overwatch despite her role in creating Omnics.
It was widely assumed Echo would be joining the cast after fan speculation. However, it was originally thought she would be named Athena. You can apparently even catch a sight of Echo on the payload in the Route 66 map. Although, she looks a little worse for wear.
Overwatch is currently enjoying its annual Archives event. The event allows you to experience some co-op story based missions based on the history of the characters. Not to mention it boasts plenty of new skins for characters like Junkrat, Zarya and many more. There are also cosmetics galore to earn or unlock via loot boxes in the form of sprays, voice lines, etc. All focused around the origins of our favourite heroes.
Of course, that’s not all for Overwatch. With Overwatch 2 already announced and still more to come regarding the gameplay for Echo in the immediate future, it’s going to be a busy year for Blizzard.
Overwatch is available now for PS4. Echo, the next hero is set to release at some point in the future.
