Ever since the first introduction of PlayStation or PSX as a video game console brand in the market, it earned a loyal following of many gamers. Officially debuted in December 1994 in Japan by Sony Entertainment, Ken Kutaragi was the brain behind the innovation of the revolutionary console who was also the Director and CEO of the company at that time. Soon in 1995, the PlayStation console took over the global market in the United States and Europe, marking a new turning point in gaming history. More than 3 decades later, the popularity of the video game console remains unwavering, and we have seen some major leaps from the original PS1 to the latest PS5 Pro.

OG PlayStation (1995)

PS 1 (2000)
The release of the PS1 console in 2000 is when we saw a major shift in popularity. It was the most iconic gaming console ever created by PlayStation, offering the same features but in a more compact design. The one key change in the PS One version was the exclusion of the reset button. In 2002, the Sony company introduced a clip-on screen called the Combo by getting rid of some minor ports on the console’s back panel. The Combo could be connected to PS1 for a more portable gaming experience.
PS 2 (2000)
Just a few months after the release of the previous version, Sony further introduced an upgraded version of it in the same year — PS 2. This version provided a smaller and cheaper redesign of the original PS1 with enhanced visual quality and user interface. The character models were more details and action-packed 3D games. Till today, the PlayStation 2 remains the best-selling console of all.
PS 2 Slimline (2004)
In 2004, the world was introduced to PS 2 Slimline, which is a more lightweight version of PS 2 in size and noise with an in-built Ethernet port for online gameplay. It made a wave in the market because of its efficiency, performance, and overall design. One of the key changes in this version was that it came with a top load after replacing the disc drive that players had previously faced issues with the dual layer in PlayStation 2.
PSP (2005)
The arrival of PSP, also called PlayStation Portable, was the first ever console that was released under the name PlayStation, and it was a powerful rival to Nintendo DS. This console featured UMDs, allowing users to watch movies, play games, and even listen to music. The portable device offered connectivity to PS 2 and PS 3 for some functions, proving its solid debut in the market.
PS 3 (2006)
We witnessed a massive upgrade in PS 3 when it was released in 2006. It was the first PlayStation console that accommodated 1080p TV displays, HDMI, and Blu-ray Disc media. In addition to PS3 games, this gaming device supported PS and PS2 games through its backward compatibility and enabled users to watch movies thanks to its Blu-ray disc feature.
PS 3 Slim (2009)
The arrival of the PS 3 Slim in 2009 introduced a slimmer variant of the PS3, cutting the weight by over a third. It offered lower power usage and a quieter ventilation system in comparison to the original model. The redesign of the cooling system saved more space and better thermals. However, users felt the absence of the backward compatibility feature in PS3 Slim, which was a big miss.
PlayStation Vita (2012)
Seven years after Sony’s first portable gaming console was released, the PlayStation Vita entered the market in 2012 with a target to challenge smartphone games. A major appeal of the Vita was the access to hundreds of top-tier game titles. The launch of Vita was considered the most innovative portable console at that time because of the many unique features that were not found in the other versions.
PS 4 (2013)
As soon as the PlayStation 4 was released in 2013, it was a massive success in the market, with a reported sold-out units of 1 million in 24 hours. The major attraction of the PS4 version was the capacity to offer five times smoother performance than the PlayStation 3, delivering a massive difference in graphic quality. It also introduced a removable HDD and DualShock 4 controller. Some of the best PS4 games released were God of War, Uncharted 4, Ghost of Tsushima, and many more.
PS 4 Pro (2016)
Three years later, the Pro version was released with an improved hardware system, providing 4K image resolutions on TV and optimised VR performance. Combining the HDR quality and double the GPU power of PS4, the PS4 Pro delivered smoother frame rates for many games.
PS 5 (2020)
The PS5 was released in 2020, offering an enhanced SSD, ray tracing technology, 120 FPS, 4K resolutions, and more, making it the highest-performing PlayStation console of all time.
PS 5 Slim (2023)
The launch of PS 5 Slim did not offer any drastic upgrade in the hardware to the undefeated PS 5. However, we saw a more compact console size than the original. The primary upgrade in PlayStation 5 Slim is the customisable design, offering the flexibility to purchase a disc-free console and attach the drive separately if required.
PS 5 Pro (2024)
The PlayStation 5 Pro is the latest in the series to be released. It features incredible elements like advanced ray tracing, ultra-clear image resolution for 4K TVs, and fluid gameplay with a smooth frame rate. Following the lead of PS 5 Slim, the PS 5 Pro also does not come with a disc drive, making the console design sleeker.
