Embracer Group’s Eidos Montreal Studio Announces Layoff, Letting 75 Developers Go

Eidos-Montreal, the Deus Ex and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy developer that was acquired by Embracer Group back in 2022 announced a fresh set of layoffs today, with 75 developers being let go.

Embracer kicked off 2024 by laying off 97 developers from Eidos Montreal and cancelling the Deus Ex game that had been in the works.

Rather than a game being cancelled, this time around it seems to be that Eidos completed support work on a game for one its sibling studios within Embracer, and was told to cut 75 people, rather than move them to other projects.

Today, we informed our studio staff that we are going to let go up to 75 valuable members, as one of our mandates is coming to an end,” Eidos wrote in a post on the studio’s LinkedIn page.

It is not a reflection of their dedication or skills, but unfortunately, we don’t have the capacity to entirely reallocate them to our other ongoing projects and services.”

We currently don’t know what Eidos Montreal is working on. Hopefully this isn’t a precursor to an announcement that the entire studio has been shuttered. Though, when it comes to Embracer Group, you’re better off expecting the worst.
