Destiny: The Taken King guide – how to obtain the Legendary Dreadfang Sword

Bungie has rolled out Destiny’s much-anticipated April patch, bringing with it a fresh bunch of goodies for the sprawling shared-world shooter, including a revamped Prison of Elders and PlayStation-exclusive content.

Among the new items for Guardians to claim is the rather meaty Dreadfang Sword; a Legendary weapon that boasts an impressive 320 Light Level. Fancy getting your grubby mitts on it? Then read on to find out more.

Part 1) The Reef

First up, you’ll want to take a trip to the Reef, where both Petra Venj and Variks will command your attention. Ignore Petra for the time being, and speak to Variks instead; he’ll hand you a new quest titled ‘At the Gates.’

Part 2) At the Gates

Accept the new quest line and jump back into your ship and head to the Dreadnaught. You’ll want to head to a mission known as Pretender to the Throne, which is located in the Mausoleum and takes the form of a Level 36 mission. This should prove little effort to complete, especially if you’re already Level 40; solo players can have a crack at it too without too many problems, so don’t worry if you’re lacking any active Destiny buddies.

Part 3) Back in Orbit

Once you’ve beaten the question, return to orbit. Next, head to a patrol mission on the Dreadnaught, which will plonk you down in the Hull Breach area. Your goal now is to simply dispatch Taken and collect Echoes of Malok that they drop; you’ll need 20 of them to complete the next part of the quest. It shouldn’t take too long.

Part 4) Pay Eris a visit

With the 20 Echoes Malok in your possession, visit the Tower and go and pay a visit to Eris Morn. She will give you the next step of the At the Gates quest.

Part 5) A new Strike

Hop back into your ship and pay a visit to the Moon on the map. You’ll notice a brand new Strike, Blighted Chalice, in the Oceans of Storms region. Commence the Strike on the Level 36 setting, and you’ll be paired up with other Guardians as per the usual manner.

Those of you who are Level 40 will find the new Strike fairly simply to complete. The main thorn in your side here will be the battle with Malok, specifically his attack known as Shadow Touched, which reduces your movement, reduces colour on your screen and effects the sound quality. Avoid the ‘fog’ that this attack creates to lessen your chances of being hit.

Part 5) With the Blighted Chalice Strike beaten, head back to the Reef and speak to Variks once again. He will then reward you with the Dreadfang Sword; this is not only a Level 320 weapon, but is quite effective against Taken thanks to the Void-based damage it inflicts.

Congrats, you’ve claimed a new weapon!
