Destiny companion app is getting a HUGE update

Bungie has updated the Destiny companion app with a series of major new features, although support for the first game has now been dropped ahead of the impending Destiny 2 release next week.

While this might come as a disappointment for those who still regularly play the 2014 shared-world shooter, fans have plenty of new content enjoy on the app for Destiny 2. Here’s five of the new features below.

  • Explore — Lets you read news stories and stay in the look with everything about the game.
  • Clans — Lets you search for and join clans. Once you join a clan, you can do things like chat with teammates and create a custom clan banner.
  • Progress — This will show "where you’ve been so far and what you should so next."
  • Gear — This shows your character’s setup, including gear and weapons
  • Find a Fireteam — Returning from the Destiny 1 companion app, this helps you find people to play with.

While you won’t be able to track your Destiny 1 characters anymore with the app, it is still possible to run community-made apps with the service, so if you’re still playing the original game it isn’t all bad news.

Furthermore, Bungie has already said that it has no plans to cease support for the original shooter, which servers remaining online for the foreseeable future. However, there won’t be any further updates for the game, though presumably the weekly reset will still roll around every Tuesday.

Destiny 2 is due to ship for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 6, 2017, with a PC version arriving on October 24. Bungie confirmed this week that it will honor original players with Destiny 2 veteran rewards, although didn’t go into any further details at the time.

Destiny 2 HDR support will also be coming post-launch for PS4 owners, with preloading available from today for digital purchases.
