Amidst all the hustle and bustle of announcements this week with Gamescom ONL 2024 you’d be forgiven for not remembering what else is going on in the games industry. For example, did you remember that Crystal Dynamics is still working on a new Tomb Raider game?
You might remember that Amazon Games head Christoph Hartmann told fans this past June that we should be hearing news on the coming game soon, along with news on a new Lord of the Rings title.
But now Gamescom has come and gone – the next major showcase for the year is The Game Awards, and while as publisher Amazon Games could hold their own event whenever it likes, we’re left with facing the current situation of no news for now.
Save for the update that Hartmann gave IGN in a new interview, specifically in the case of the coming Tomb Raider title. According to Hartmann, “things are going well, things are moving forward.”
And what’s more is that according to Hartmann, all the awfulness that has continued to surround Embracer Group hasn’t impacted Crystal Dynamics all too much.
It did suffer some layoffs last year, but it’s also worth mentioning that it’s been made clear before that Embracer would coddle and protect the Tomb Raider project, since that’s one of the biggest IP’s in its cap. Hartman also notes that Embracer isn’t just one big company, so it’s not too difficult for some of its entities under its umbrella to be siphoned off on their own.
Fans who’ve been anxiously waiting to hear more though can at least attempt to take solace in Hartmann’s emphasizing that everyone involved on the project understands how high the stakes are.
“I mean, doing a new Tomb Raider, the bar is so high. The longer you go, the expectation goes higher, so it’s a huge, huge task, but things are progressing. I mean, there’s some really great ideas here,” says Hartmann.
We’ll see how great those ideas are when we finally start learning more about the coming title.
