Cities: Skylines 2 arrived on PC back in October 2023, with it’s console release said to arrive sometime in Spring 2024. Then it was meant to arrive on PS5 and other modern consoles in October 2024. Now, developer Colossal Order has confirmed it has been delayed again, but this time with no new release date in sight.
In a blog post on the official forum for publisher Paradox Interactive, the confirmation came through that Cities: Skylines 2 is not ready for its October release, and has yet to meet the performance targets Paradox and Colossal Order set for themselves.
The post called their progress on the console version “slow but steady” and citied “unresolved issues impacting the game in ways that harm the player experience” as reasons for the slower than expected progress. For now, the delay is an indefinite one.
On the potentially positive side of things though, the post points to the potential of a release date being announced sometime within the year, if all goes well in the next phase of the console port’s development.
“Dear Console players,
We wanted to update you on the console release schedule. Unfortunately, we have not yet met the stability and performance targets we set for the console release. Without a Release Candidate (RC), we are now unable to meet an October release window.
While we are making slow but steady progress, there are still unresolved issues impacting the game in ways that harm the player experience we want to deliver. We expect to receive a new RC, which will undergo a thorough review in August. This evaluation will determine whether we can begin the submission progress and provide a solid release date, or if further issues need to be addressed.
We understand this is disappointing, and it’s not what we had hoped for either. However, we are committed to keeping you informed throughout this development process, even if the updates aren’t always what we’d like.
Thank you for your understanding and support.”
When Cities: Skylines 2 launched on PC last October, and it did so to a wave of backlash regarding the game’s poor performance, so much that Paradox and Colossal Order stepped up to admit it had erred.
No one wants a repeat of that for the console launch, so hopefully this extra time will be what was needed to ensure a smoother launch on consoles.
