Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & The Envisioned Land Hands-On Preview

Lost memory has long been a trope of the JRPG genre of games. Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land leans heavily into this motif making memories central in its story.

The Atelier series of games were at one time exclusively released in Asia, but over the years the games have come to more territories and platforms. This title sees the game release worldwide on the most number of platforms (first time on Xbox) and with the most language translations with Spanish and German being supported for the first time in the history of the Atelier series.

We recently got to go hands-on for a couple of hours with the game. Speaking to game producer and Gust studio head Junzo Hosoi he mentions the movies The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as being big inspirations for the character of Yumia and her story.

Furthermore the concept of memory in the game has a deeper more personal meaning to him with his own Father having a brain tumour and suffering with memory loss. It makes this already intriguing story more grounded and heartfelt.

Forbidden Art

Atelier Yumia introduces players to a world where alchemy is considered evil. Based in the land of the Aladissian Empire where the practice of alchemy once flourished, protagonist and new character to the series Yumia Liessfeldt is on a quest to uncover the truth behind the sudden mysterious demise of the once great Empire.

Having lost her mother three years previously Yumia learned that she was from a family of alchemists leaving her with an appetite to learn about the past and why the practice of alchemy became a subject looked upon with such disdain.

To help on this adventure Yumia has a party of up to six characters tagging along on this quest. It’s a varied bunch each with their own style, personality and abilities. During combat players can switch between the party members giving access to each of their unique skills and moves.

Vast Lands

The game plays out across the vast lands of the Aladiss continent, a more open setting than the previous titles in the series. This idea was inspired by Hosoi San’s own love for Halo and the experience he had playing which he wanted players of this game to have a similar open exploration experience.

For those unfamiliar with the Atelier games the gameplay loop involves procuring materials you need through exploration. Gathered elements can then be used in a synthesis system to create items required to advance the story and improve your skills. Each synthesised item features five Alchemy Cores and adding ingredients to each core can alter the effects, quality and traits of the item.

This system can be as involved (or not) as you like as the developers have thankfully included an automated option. Players just chose to prioritise either quality, effect or just the bare minimum and the nitty gritty is taken care of. This is a very welcome addition as it opens up the game to differing gaming tastes. Likewise the new building system in this release allows players to craft and design their very own Atelier of their dreams and also has the automated option for players who don’t fancy getting too involved. For those that do, then there is a plethora of option for parts to design with.

There is plenty to explore and traversing the regions of the continent can be sped up with the use of ziplines, vehicles and fast travel. The ability to jump and double jump aids in getting to hard-to-reach spots to uncover secrets. It is a chilled vibe but there is very much a dark sinister undertone here with the mysterious secrets of the past offering an intriguing journey.

Tactical Combat

The combat here is more action focused than previously but there are also some tactical elements involved. While players can parry, dodge and counter attacks they can also move between 2 attack zones – “close” and “ranged”. Depending on which zone your active character is located in opens up different attacks with which to try defeating your enemies. More formidable foes will have you on your toes shifting between close and ranged combat. It adds a nice variety and challenge as you advance through the story.

With an enemy stunned it is also possible to use cooperative attacks called “Friend Actions” so you and other characters in your party can dish out some serious damage.

Visual Delights

While the cell shaded style visuals are stunning to look at its the character performances that really shine. It is a real treasure to see what the team have managed to portray. Yumia is a true stand out here with the level of emotion in her eyes some real wizardry at work. Her own struggles, doubts and internal conflicts are clear to see without her even saying a word. It’s glorious.

If you’ve never tackled an Atelier game before don’t be put off by the fact that this is the 26th game in the beloved series. With a compelling story, responsive combat and deep crafting and building systems should you want them, Atelier Yumia The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land has appeal for different tastes.

Dip your toe in… you might be surprised by what you find.

Atelier Yumia The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land releases on March 21 on PS5, PS4, Switch, Xbox and PC.
