Ubisoft’s Darby McDevitt has responded to online reports that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla protagonist Eivor was originally supposed to be female only, saying that the story was conceived always with both male and female genders in mind.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Always Intended To Have Both Genders
Here’s what McDevitt had to say on the game’s official Reddit:
I will say this once: this is not wholly accurate.
And I will repeat what I have always said. ACV’s story was conceived from the beginning with both female and male in mind. When you play the game you will understand that there is no way the male could have been added at the last minute, or whatever version of this story you have heard.
Obviously there is more nuance to all this, but to go deeper would spoil lots of the mysteries at the heart of the game. But understand this, that we started ACV knowing full well that Ubi wanted to give players the ability to select characters, and we worked hard to make sure that it honored our lore.
The response comes in wake of a number of claims about Ubisoft’s game development, one of which suggested that bigwigs refused to allow Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey to place more emphasis on its female characters.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is due for release on PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X and Xbox One, and will initially launch on November 17 for current-generation formats.
