AMD says PS4’s APU is the ‘most powerful we have built’

The PlayStation 4’s accelerated processing unit (APU) is the most powerful of its kind ever produced by AMD, the hardware giant has said.

PS4’s specs were revealed in detail during the PlayStation Meeting last week, where it was confirmed the machine would boast 8GB memory and custom AMD Radeon GPU.

“We have not built an APU quite like that for anyone else in the market,” said AMD’s global business manager, John Taylor.

“It is by far the most powerful APU we have built to date.”

“None that will quite be to that level of sheer number of cores, sheer number of teraflops,” he explained.

Yesterday it was reported that the PS4’s CPU will clock in at 2 GHz, with development kits up to this point having been scaled down to 1.6 GHz.

PS4 will be released this holiday season.
