Amazon MGM Studios Is Reportedly Still Working On The Mass Effect Series Despite BioWare’s Closure

The Mass Effect series is still in development at Amazon MGM Studios, according to sources speaking with IGN close to Prime Video, despite the closure of developer BioWare.

The site reports that all creatives previously attached to the Mass Effect series are still involved in the project. Back in August 2025, this included showrunner Doug Jung, writer Daniel Casey, Karim Zreik as executive producer, as well as Mike Gamble and Ari Arad. The series has been in the works since 2024, and while details are a bit thin on the ground, we know it won’t be a retelling of Commander Shepard’s story depicted in the Mass Effect trilogy, instead taking place after those events.

Earlier this year, it was reported by The Ankler that Peter Friendlander, Head of Global TV for Amazon MGM Studios, had started reading scripts for in-development projects at Prime Video with the intention of making firm decisions about them — including Mass Effect. This resulted in the series apparently undergoing rewrites to appeal to non-gamers, but according to Casey, this was not the case.

Mass Effect had been reported to begin production in Q4 2026, although IGN notes that there’s no date in place at this time. Given BioWare’s closure, it remains unknown what will happen to the video game franchise, whether EA intends to sell the IP or keep it on ice similar to Dead Space.
