A witty script, a funny character, or an amusing scenario can do wonders for your mood. Though it’s good fun mowing down a thousand bad guys with a machine gun or stabbing a zombie through the eye with a pair of scissors, playing a game that makes you roar with laughter, rather than grit your teeth like a WWE wrestler, can really lift your spirit.
Over the years we’ve enjoyed some great games on PlayStation platforms that have allowed us to do just that by providing us with more laugh-out-loud moments than a Robin Williams stand-up gig. Without further ado, here’s some of those titles that are worth checking out if you’re up for a laugh.
1. South Park: The Stick of Truth
Obsidian Entertainment’s 2014 role-playing game was created specifically to make players laugh. With the original South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone in charge of the script and overseeing design, The Stick of Truth does justice to the hilarious T.V. show with more funny moments and gags than any other game on the planet.
South Park thrives on controversy and though some of the gags are quite close to the knuckle, it’s the school playground-humour that makes it so funny.
Funny quote: Jimmy The Bard and his songs – “There once was a maiden from Stonebury Hollow. She didn’t talk much, but boy did she swallow! I had a nice lance that she sat upon, The lady from Stonebury, who is also your mom!”
2. Deadpool
Billed as an action comedy beat ‘em up (that may be a first), High Moon Studio’s Deadpool may have been lacking in the gameplay department but boy was it funny. Satirical gags, sexual innuendos and toilet humour bombarded players throughout the game like bullets from a Gatling gun, and though it can get a little tiresome at times, there are genuine moments where you can’t help but laugh out loud while carrying out the semi-serious work of a wise-cracking antihero by pummelling enemies with giant hammers and plasma guns.
Funny quote – “Yeah. That is a gun in my pants. But that doesn’t mean I’m not happy to see you…”
3. Saints Row : The Third
It’s not so much the script of Volition’s open world action adventure that provides some of Saints Row’s funniest moments, but it’s more about the humorous situations you find yourself in; whacking someone over the head with the ‘Dildo Bat,’ for example, never fails to make us laugh.
Saints Row is one of those games where you can create your own funny moments, such as carrying out missions in the nude with a flamethrower in your hand, or discovering inventive ways to kill enemies. From the cleverly-written in-game commercials and over-the-top missions, to the larger-than-life characters, it’s hard to play Saints Row: The Third without a massive grin all over your face.
Funny quote: Jon: “I know you think I’m just a mindless recording. I’m programmed to repeat silly bits of patter while you drive around and murder people in this video game, right? Look, maybe that’s true. Maybe it’s true… but I got a question; how independent are YOU? Turning the tables is what I’m doing here. You think you have free will, but really you’re just doing what the game tells you to do. How much control do you really have over your own life? I mean, think about it, this is what you do. Take a look, man… you sit around all day playing a video game and listening to fake radio stations. What are you doing with your life? Don’t you want to get a girlfriend and maybe learn something new? Surprise us. Take a class, get a skill… we already know you can punch buttons and pull your pud! C’mon, man!”

4. The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
Lucasfilm Games’ original 1990 point-and-click adventure didn’t arrive on PlayStation platforms until 2009 in the form of an enhanced special edition, but it really was worth the wait. Brilliant script-writing ensures that the frequent one-liners are much more than just filler with clever in-jokes and punchlines that ensure you’ll be giggling throughout.
Excellent voice acting also ensured that lines were delivered with impeccable comedic timing. Some of the ‘in-jokes’ may be more relevant to the gaming industry back in the ‘90s, but there’s still plenty of laughs available in one of gaming’s most hilarious adventures.
Funny quote – “Meathook: You’ve got a real attitude problem!
Guybrush: Well…you’ve got a real hair problem!
Meathook: You just don’t know when to quit, do you?
Guybrush: Neither did your barber.
5. Grand Theft Auto V
From the brilliantly-written scripts for the radio channels to the hilarious glitches which are usually found in open-world games of this scope, all of the Grand Theft Auto games have funny moments. GTA V does it best though with some memorable characters that are as funny as they are scary, not to mention some epic one-liners and hilarious situations that you often find yourselves in. Like Saint’s Row, Rockstar gives players all the tools they need to create their own humour, but it’s those unpredictable scripted moments (Trevor fighting a group of muscle-heads on the beach in his pants) that provide the main laughs.
Funny quote: ‘’Remember to turn off your cell phones, and please don’t masturbate.’’ – An advert shown at the cinema.
