4A Games Is Working On Next Metro Game And A New IP; 2022 Russian Invasion Changed How New Metro Story Is Going To Be Told

4A Games has taken to its official website to provide fans with an update of what’s coming next from the studio as it celebrates the 15th anniversary of the Metro franchise, which includes a new entry in that series as well as a completely new IP.

Alongside the evolution of Metro, our studio has also been on a journey from releasing our first game with a 60-person team in 2010, to now 200+ across two locations – From Kyiv, where 150 of our development team are based, to our headquarters in Sliema, Malta, following our expansion in 2014 – with two triple-A projects in development – The next Metro of course, and a brand-new unannounced IP. Using everything we have learned over the past 20 years we are pushing our ambitions even higher than ever before.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 changed how the team wanted to tell the story of the new Metro game, with 4A Games continuing to collaborate with Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author and creator of the franchise who has vehemently spoken out against the war that resulted in him being sentenced to jail.

We do want to reassure you that work is continuing on both of our projects despite missile strikes, air-raid sirens, and terror still raining down on Ukraine. These circumstances are incredibly challenging, the situation remains dangerous and not within our control, but we are currently as safe as possible, and we want to manage your expectations around the reveal of the next Metro title, it will be ready when it is ready, and we can’t wait for you to see it.

The studio closed by stating that the Metro series has traditionally delivered an emotionally-charged narrative that is focussed political and anti-war themes, and this is set to continue with the next instalment. Furthermore, 4A Games as a studio has grown considerably since the 2010, when it comprised of 60 individuals to over 200 across two locations — Kyiv and Sliema, Malta.

The new Metro game is currently in development for as-yet undisclosed platforms.
