Far Cry Primal dev explains the lack of dinosaurs

Far Cry Primal doesn’t feature dinosaurs as Ubisoft wanted to remain true to the time period in which it is set, the game’s lead writer has said.

Ubisoft’s next chapter in its open-world franchise takes place in a prehistoric setting, although it keeping in with historical accuracy, doesn’t set dinosaurs against humans.

There are no dinosaurs in Primal,” Kevin Shortt told IGN. “Because we chose a period. Yes it’s prehistoric but it’s a period in the stone age we wanted to represent. And dinos, historically, are millions of years in the past, and humans and dinos never were together, so we just decided to be true to that. Would it be fun? Sure. But for us, no. We wanted to represent the stone age – we want to be as true to that period as we can while giving our colorful flair.

I just really like how we approached the narrative, this time around. It’s really giving players the opp to go at it as they want. There’s no right path. All players will have a different experience. They’re going to go to this specialist, and find this wenja character, and bring them to the village. They do that their own way. I’m really excited to hear the difference in stories. That’s what’s great about Far Cry. So many players have unique stories – and now that the narrative is quite fluid in the way that players approach it, I’m really excited to hear those stories.”

Far Cry Primal is due out later this month for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. The game takes place in the fictional region of Oros, where players control a seasoned hunter known as Takkar, who must fend for himself in a hostile landscape populated by pugnacious wildlife and rival human tribes.

In their quest for survival, gamers will be able to craft a variety of primitive weapons to defend themselves with, as well as tame various creatures to aid them in combat and exploration. Indeed, the game is a ‘far cry’ (sorry, couldn’t resist) away from past entries in the multi-million selling franchise, eschewing modern trapping such as firearms and vehicles in a bid to shake things up.
