Assassin’s Creed film is set mostly in the present day

The executive producer behind the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film has confirmed the action-adventure flick will be set mainly in the present day.

Speaking with IGN, Pat Crowley said that the movie, based on Ubisoft’s multi-million selling video game franchise, will take place 65 percent in modern times and 35 percent in its historical setting of 15th century Spain.

This obviously is at odds with the games themselves, which are predominantly set in the past with only small sections dedicated to the present day storyline. However, the Assassin’s Creed film isn’t an adaptation of any one game in the series, but rather crafts its own unique tale.

"There are certain things that we absolutely want to respect in the game," said lead actor Michael Fassbender, "but we also want to bring new elements to the game. This isn’t a video game that we’re making. We’re trying to make a cinematic experience, so there are new things that we have to introduce."

Assassin’s Creed hits cinemas in December 2016.
